Club Activities

Club Meetings

Club meetings are a time when we can get together with other hams and exchange ideas, friendly conversation, and have a sense of comradely. We come from all walks of life but share a common bond that is the love of Ham Radio. Join one of our meetings and see what a great club this really is! Check the Meetings and Organization page for more details.

Summits and Parks on the Air

Picture

Parks on the Air is an international activity where hams activate a designated park by operating and logging 10 contacts.
The pota.app site lists the individual activations so "hunters" can find them and make contact. Points are awarded to activators and hunters.

Many of our members participate personally in POTA. However, the club has begun some new activity in 2022 to have regular POTA outings for any members wanting to learn and participate. Join the fun!

Check to POTA Corner for past and upcoming activities.

Builders and Experimenters

This group helped to construct and test the End-Fed Half-Wave antennas used for Field Day 2022. Fun project and useful results.

Monthly Technical Programs
Club meetings have either activities or technical sessions on a variety of topics interesting to Ham radio operators. Antenna building is one of the most popular activities. See the Technical Programs Tab for details on upcoming and past sessions.

See the Technical Programs tab for a listing and materials from past sessions.

We conduct ARRL License testing at every meeting during the year. We have a full staff of VE (Volunteer Examiners) ready to give your exam so you can obtain an FCC amateur radio license.

Testing time is generally set for 1pm Eastern Time, but contact us to be certain.

Public Service

Picture
The Cherokee Amateur Radio Society regularly participates in Public Service activities where communications is required for safety and general information passing. Each Spring we support the Georgia Death Race, held on the Benton MacKaye Trail in Northwest Georgia.
In 2023 this will be held on March 25th, 2023

In fall, we support the Georgia Jewel, which is also an extreme marathon race held in the Dalton GA area. Scheduled for September 15, 2023

Ham Radio and Scouting

Our club fully supports the Radio Merit Badge process for Boy Scouts of America.

We participate in JOTA (Jamboree On The Air),  held the third weekend in October. There are no official hours, so you have the whole weekend to make JOTA contacts. The event officially starts Friday evening during the JOTA Jump Start and runs through Sunday evening.

Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers, including girls. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater).

If you would like to volunteer to help scouts earn their radio merit badge, contact Dave Crandall  W4DTX.
